# Labels

> Create and manage labels to categorize tasks across lists and projects.

Labels let you tag tasks with categories that cut across your list and folder structure. Unlike status (which tracks workflow progress), labels describe what kind of work a task is or what it relates to, and you can filter views by them.

## Create a label

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Settings">
    Go to **Settings > Labels**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add a label">
    Click **Add label**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name it and pick a color">
    Choose a descriptive name and a color that makes it easy to spot in task lists.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Add labels to tasks

Open a task and use the **Labels** field in the right-hand sidebar to add one or more labels.

## Filter views by label

In any view, use the filter menu to show only tasks with a specific label. This lets you see all related work across all lists at once, regardless of which folder or list each task lives in.

## Label ideas that work well

* **Type of work**: `bug`, `feature`, `research`, `documentation`, `design`
* **Category or scope**: `Q2`, `v1.0`, `customer-request`, `technical-debt`
* **Urgency or effort**: `quick-win`, `stretch-goal`, `urgent`

<Tip>
  Keep your label set small and consistent. A handful of labels used regularly
  is far more powerful than dozens that are applied inconsistently.
</Tip>
