Assigning a task removes ambiguity. When every task has an owner, your team knows exactly who is responsible and nothing slips through the cracks. An unassigned task is an ownerless task, and ownerless tasks don’t get done.

How to assign a task

There are three ways to assign a task: From the task detail panel:
1

Open the task

Click the task title to open the task detail panel.
2

Click the Assignees field

Find the Assignees field in the right-hand sidebar.
3

Select one or more teammates

Choose people from the dropdown. You can assign as many people as needed.
From the list or board view:
  • Right-click a task item to open the context menu, then choose Assignee.
  • Click the assignee avatar(s) on the task item directly to add or change assignees without opening the task.

Tips for effective assignments

  • Assign before the meeting ends: if a task comes out of a discussion, assign it immediately while everyone’s attention is on it.
  • Check for unassigned tasks regularly: periodically scan your lists for tasks without assignees and make sure each one has a clear owner.
  • Filter views by assignee: create a view filtered to your name to see exactly what’s on your plate for the day or week.
If someone doesn’t appear in the assignee list, they’re not a member of the workspace yet. Invite them from Settings > Members.
Assigned users are automatically subscribed to the task and receive notifications when it’s updated, commented on, or has its status changed. And anyone can unsubscribe from the task if they don’t want to receive updates, but it’s generally best to stay subscribed to tasks you own so you don’t miss important changes.
Anyone who makes changes to a task is automatically subscribed to it, so if you comment on a task or change its status, you’ll get notifications about future updates until you choose to unsubscribe.
