Some tasks are too big, or involve too many people, to track as a single item. Subtasks let you break a larger task into smaller, trackable pieces (each with its own status, priority, and assignees) while keeping everything under one parent task.

How to create subtasks

1

Open a task

Click the task title to view its detail panel.
2

Go to the Subtasks section

Scroll to the Subtasks section at the bottom of the task detail.
3

Add a subtask

Type a title and press Enter. Repeat to add more.

Working with subtasks

  • Check off each subtask as it’s completed.
  • Open a subtask by clicking it to assign it or set a due date.
  • Select multiple subtasks at once to delete them in bulk.

When to use subtasks

Use subtasks when a task involves sequential or parallel steps that different people might own. For example: Task: “Launch new landing page”
  • Subtask: “Write copy” → assigned to marketing
  • Subtask: “Create mockups” → assigned to design
  • Subtask: “Build the page” → assigned to engineering
  • Subtask: “Review and approve” → assigned to lead
This way, each person can work on their piece independently while the parent task shows the overall status of the initiative.
Subtasks don’t appear in the main task list; they only appear inside the parent task. Keep them focused and short so the parent task stays scannable.

Subtask progress indicator

Tasks that have subtasks display a circular progress ring directly on the task item in the list and board views. It shows a completed/total count (for example, 2/4) so you can see how far along a task is without opening it. This makes it easy to spot which tasks are nearly done and which ones haven’t been started yet, just by scanning the list.
